In one line

Our purchase evaluation is an offer to buy. It is not a formal written appraisal for insurance, probate or tax use. Formal appraisals are not something we write.

When a formal appraisal is the right tool

These are the common situations where a written appraisal is needed rather than an offer.

  • Insurance coverage

Before scheduling a valuable collection on a policy, an insurer may ask for a written appraisal.

  • Probate

An estate attorney or the court may want a documented value to include in the estate accounting.

  • Tax filings

Estate, gift and some other tax returns can require a value supported by a qualified appraiser.

  • Charitable gifts

Donating coins to a museum or charity and taking a deduction can call for a formal appraisal.

Who makes that call

Your insurance agent, attorney or CPA can tell you whether you need one, and what it has to contain to be accepted.

Looking to sell rather than insure?

When the goal is selling, a purchase evaluation gives you our offer, and you can still get other offers or an independent appraisal before deciding. Call to set a time at our private Denton office, at your home or at a secure location such as your bank.

What a purchase evaluation includes

We go item by item and talk you through what we notice, without jargon.

What we check and explain

  • What each coin is: country, series, date and mint letter
  • Its condition, from wear and dings to signs of cleaning
  • Whether it contains gold or silver
  • Whether it is mainly a collector coin or mainly a metal coin
  • An offer you may accept or decline, for all of it or only part

What it does not include

  • A formal written appraisal
  • A value for insurance, probate, tax or donation use
  • Third-party grading, such as from PCGS or NGC

We buy U.S. and world coins, proof and mint sets, gold and silver coins, and complete collections. Loose coins are covered on our page about selling coins, and albums or boxes on selling a coin collection. Key dates and errors have their own page on rare coins.

Needing both is common

An estate might need a formal appraisal now and still plan to sell the coins later. One does not get in the way of the other.

  • Have an independent appraiser do the formal appraisal, if your attorney or CPA says it is required
  • Leave the coins in the same holders and order they were in for the appraisal
  • When it is time to sell, gather the coins and a photo ID

The two numbers will not match

Insurance appraisals usually state replacement value, meaning the retail cost of buying the same coins again.

That figure normally sits above what any buyer will offer, and the gap does not mean either number is wrong.

How a purchase evaluation unfolds

Four steps from your first call to your decision. Bringing a friend or relative is always fine.

  1. Ask for a time

Send the evaluation request on this page, or call. Form requests get a phone call back during business hours to set the appointment.

  2. Pick a weekday slot

Evaluations are by appointment, Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. Bring a photo ID along with the coins.

  3. Go through the coins together

We examine each coin with you and explain what it is, how worn it is and anything notable about it.

  4. Hear the offer and decide

Accept the offer, decline it, or sell just part. Walking away with every coin is a perfectly fine result.

Want a purchase evaluation?

Fill in the request form on this page. Photos are optional, but they let us take a first look at the coins before we meet.

Questions about appraisals and evaluations

Do you appraise coins?

Not in the formal sense. What we do is a purchase evaluation, which ends in an offer to buy. Our purchase evaluation is an offer to buy. It is not a formal written appraisal for insurance, probate or tax use.

Why would your offer differ from an appraised value?

An appraisal answers a specific question, such as what it would cost to replace a collection for insurance. Our offer answers a different one: what we will pay to buy the coins at the appointment. Different questions lead to different numbers.

Where do I find someone to write a formal appraisal?

Look for an independent appraiser who focuses on coins and writes reports for your purpose. Your attorney, CPA or insurance agent may know whom to call.

Can I get a purchase evaluation and still keep my coins?

Of course. Hear the offer, ask your questions and say no if you like. You are under no obligation to sell.

Do I need a formal appraisal before I sell?

It depends on your reason for selling. If an estate, insurer or tax return needs a documented value, ask your attorney or CPA about a formal appraisal first. If you just want to sell, a purchase evaluation gets you our offer, and you are free to compare it with others.
